Membership Criteria
Child Helpline International (CHI) is only as strong as its member child helplines and depends on its members in many ways. The experiences, activities and information shared by its members, and the links maintained with the Secretariat, enable CHI to remain well informed and to respond to needs as they arise. Member child helplines need to be prepared to share experiences and to work with the CHI Secretariat in ensuring the right issues are discussed and addressed.

Any organisation interested in becoming a member of the CHI network is asked to meet the following criteria:

Core Values/Children and Telecoms
The organisation offers:
• Telecommunication services;
• For or on behalf of children;
         o over 50% of all contacts are made by or on behalf of children
         o if the helpline is not targeted at children, it must have a separate documentation system for children’s contacts
• Which provides direct services intervention (i.e., counselling, referral; active listening)

Operations

The helpline:
• Has a process in place for recruitment and selection of staff and volunteers
• Has a system in place for the provision of training, supervision and support for staff and volunteers
• Records all activities with children, while it safeguards information

Management
The helpline/parent body:
• Must be registered
• Must have a board/supervisory committee
• Must have annually independently-audited accounts or the equivalent

To successfully apply for membership of the CHI network, the helpline will:
• Provide two recognised references from INGO/UNICEF/NGOs
• Complete a CHI data proforma
• Complete a PSP self-regulation checklist
• Subdue the membership annual membership fee
The Supervisory Board of CHI decides on applications for membership at its semi-annual meetings.

To remain a full member of the CHI network, a member helpline must, on an annual basis:

• Complete the PSP checklist
These three actions must be complied with by April 30 every year. Child Helplines in compliance with these requirements are full members.
