08.03.2010No violence in schools: Learn without Fear!
Plan’s Learn Without Fear campaign was set up to address the fact that cruel and humiliating forms of physical punishment, gender-based violence and bullying are a daily reality for millions of children. Each year, 150 million girls and 73 million boys across the world are subjected to sexual violence, and 20–65 per cent of schoolchildren report being verbally or physically bullied. At present, almost 90 countries have not yet prohibited corporal punishment in schools.
Plan’s Learn Without Fear campaign aims to end violence against children in all schools, with a focus on the 48 developing countries in which Plan works. The campaign targets three of the most ommon and damaging forms of violence in schools: sexual violence, bullying and corporal punishment. CHI fully supports the goals of the Learn without Fear campaign, as we believe that children should grow up in world without violence. The report on the campaign highlights the result of the first year of the campaign in the focus countries of Plan and two pilot projects. The report can be found here. In December 2009, Plan International and CHI signed a Memorandum of Understanding to implement projects to combat and prevent violence in schools. Both organisations have started a joint pilot project to gather data in selected target countries to gain more insight into the incidence of violence in schools.
